Ecoboost has the torque

EcoTec3 has the sound and might be slightly more efficient and will be dead reliable for years to come.

I'd say Chevy V8.

Cool

In which vehicle ?

do you like cylinder deactivation? Is it smooth enough ?

In my hypothetical 4x4 truck. Though I do drive a Miata that would be absolutely worlds better with a FiST ecoboost engine.

Never driven one, but from what I've read it's pretty smooth.

Ecoboost Pro's: It has got power and torque. It is very tuneable. Ecoboost Con's: It's a Ford and something will quickly go wrong electronically(unless they changed). It already has a track record of carbon buildup, which is bad. When the turbo's go, it will be expensive.

Ecotec3 Pro's: It is simpler, sounds better, will probably last longer, be more effecient, and it will tow nearly as well. Ecotec3 Con's: It might catch on fire. Might be recalled often.(sorry Logansteno)

Ecoboost!

from personal experience, the ecoboost V6 is enjoyable when new, but the Chevy is what I'd get if I actually needed something to last for 150k.

Not brand biased, just use both engines a lot. The Ecoboost to the EcoTec is like a 5.0 to a powerstroke diesel - 5.0 has slightly better gas mileage, but this drastically changes when towing 5 tons. Neither is a slouch.

haha the FiST engine would be sweet in the Miata

I want to drive it. That tech sounds cool to me

I think the ecoboost is great, but down the road I'd rather have a high milage V8 thats simple.

Haha the recall comment made me chuckle.

Fire doesn't scare me. You can usually get out in time. Usually...

Thanks. I was kind of thinking the same things but didn't have any personal experience.

the ecoboost is the faster engine, but thats the end of my pros list for it, everywhere else the ecotec takes it

Thank you. Interesting take. If speed is the main advantage of the Ford engine then I would go Chevy. Trucks shouldn't be about 0-60 times , IMO

There is no doubt the Ford engine will pull like hell, but at the end of the day, the GM will use less fuel, be less maintenance intensive and nearly as quick...so whats the advantage of spending the extra coin up front on the ecoboost?

Amazing how well EcoBoost is marketed. I'm getting this feedback for someone else who is looking to buy a truck. Neither of us are up to date on trucks because he hasn't purchased one for personal use in a long time and I never have. He thought EcoBoost is more efficient...

Truth is; it CAN be, but isn't usually. I have a buddy with an EBf150 and he sees 17-18 around town and 13 towing. Thats right in line with a modern Ecotec V8.

Do you know if cylinder deactivation in the EcoTec will affect reliability in the future? Does the added complexity impact the engine's lifespan? Or not really?

My *guess* is that a turbo setup is more complex than cylinder deactivation due to have more parts that can break after the warranty is up.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Manuél Ferrari

Kinja'd!!!1

Cylinder deactivation is based on the same technology as variable valve timing, pretty damn reliable. Turbo engines are MUCH more complex, hell take away the turbos and the Ford engine is already more complex (DOHC vs Pushrod) but aside from the part count there is heat to deal with as well as the difference is byproducts from burning such high fuel and air volumes in a small cavity and emissions equip.
